I love this...
Customer: “My internet is not working.”
Me: “I can help you with that. Are the lights on your modem lit?”
Customer: “Yes.”
Me: “Good, is the one labeled ‘online’ blinking?”
Customer: “I don’t have a light like that, but it does have the time.”
Me: “The…time?”
Customer: “Yes, and there’s a button labeled snooze!”

recent phone pics...
Nick working his way through two medium spicy pizzas after he found out that Pizza Hut had run out of large pizza bases (gutted).
This is a pic from my very first Ice hockey match I went to see with Jon. The Cardiff Devils drew 2-2 in what must be one of the most amusingly violent sports I have ever watched. I am looking forward to watching them again when they play the Stingrays on Sunday 13th Sept.
The view from a very tall mountain in west Wales following a blustery climb.
The photo that started the 'I look like the dad pig off Peppa Pig' discussion.
Cath drinking coffee (which is what we did lots of on holidays).
One of my favorite views because it means I am probably drinking a grande white mocha with whipped cream and eating a cinamon swirl in Starbucks.

There are some greetings that due to some unknown reason aren't used enough. 'Ahoy' being one of them. If you are reading this blog, leave a comment with other lesser used greetings that you think should worm their way back into common usage :)

i bought a book...
I'm not a huge book fan really but something about Pride and Predjudice and Zombies stood out to me. It is my summer read along with City of Thieves which I am enjoying so far.
I am staring to feel better now, there are fewer badgers in my skull, and wierdly I am missing the gym!?!?! who'd have thought that was even possible? I even missed people in work too, not the work mind, please don't get confused with that.
My car failed it's MOT on it's number plates?!? random eh? but that was cheap enough to fix.
I'm tired and shouldn't blog when I'm tired.
good night all.

ooops...
looking back on yesterday I may not have eaten the best food possible If I am trying to get into shape. But to be honest at least bananas in custard contain one of my five a day right?
Today I need to get to the gym and burn off some of the junk.
I am working on ways to simplify my life. I think I may have bitten off much more than I can chew and as tasty a ferero rochers are it is very difficult to eat more than seven in a minute. I think the same with me that although I love doing all the things I am doing I need to cut it back somewhat. My 'Ten things' idea has already been smashed and I am regularly asked to embark on more and more projects. Thankfully I am now involving others in it all to take the load off me. So for now I am focusing on my business and cutting back on other stuff like making sockmonkies, local business card, life is mootiful, and a host of others. not forever you understand, but for now I am passing them over to carefully selected folk, chosen for their skills and character.
I'm not good at trusting folk, nothing personal. I just find it hard :s

love this...
Don't know if many people out there listen to the Scott Mills show on radio 1? but regardless he introduced a singing sensation to the world:
WING
out of tune, high pitched but very lovable.
But guess what?!!?? she is on spotify!
http://open.spotify.com/track/2DT1ipIEzUU22tXMAnPHaD
Click the link for the clasic ACDC 'Back in Black' as only Wing could sing it.
check out all the other songs by her, there are loads! love it.

harry potter and the half a story line...
I took my youngest to the cinema last night to watch Harry Potter 19 (the half-hearted storyline)... hmmmmmmmmm... It was one of those films when the trailer was more interesting than the film. Why did it seem such a good idea to have an entire film revolving around the love lives of 27yr old (not far off anyway) school kids? followed with gandalf faling from a tower???
Anyway, the trailer for G.I. Joe looked ok, and I wierdly fancy watching G-Force too,

this week...
...I have been mainly aching.
In an effort to get in better shape this week I have been doing various bits of exercise. Monday evening I went kickboxing! (yep propper exercise) and I soon realised how out of shape I was. But will be back there again on Monday as It's quite fun punching stuff. Tuesday I ached all day long, barely able to drive to work (well actually the driving was ok, it was the holding on to the wheel I struggled with). Wednesday I played tennis! (much better than the previous week where it wasn't 'tennis' i played but more a game of 'swing the bat in the air'). Last night I went and did some weights at the gym! and even had a trot along on the running machine!
So today I am mildly aching again, sitting at my desk having just eaten a banana (yes fruit!). This evening I am going to boxercise too! cool fun! soon I shall be superfit!

a poem...
somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
ee cummings
somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near
your slightest look will easily unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully, mysteriously) her first rose
or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully ,suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;
nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing
(i do not know what it is about you that closes and opens;
only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

I think I have returned from a two day conference in Hereford where yesterday I think realy did happen, but looking back on today I am not sure if it has happened yet... did Jon sing 'you sexy thing' in front of a chanting crowd?... why are some conversations a blur? what was said? hmmmm... my head is very confused... answers on a postcard please...

just want to say...
Me not being in work today had nothing at all to do with the death of Michael Jackson. I was not off with grief!!!
Am I the only person in the world who isn't really torn appart? Is the Michael Jackson who died the same one who is often in the news for suspicious incidents with boys? all over the tv and radio were people saying 'how great he is', eh? ok he wrote some great songs but in my oppinion he was quite simply 'odd'.
p.s Cath wants to know if Bubbles can now come live with us.

what I want to know is...
why can't weeds take a break over summer? Surely it is too warm at the moment to spend all your effort growing? And why is it that even though I don't water the weeds in the evening, I can guarantee that by the next day they will be double the size with lush green foliage?
Such is life I guess.
It was the first day back in work for me today after a weeks holiday (when I say holiday I mean not working) (when I say not working I mean not doing my usual 9-5 work). It has been quite a stressful day fixing a few problems that grew while I was away. So the time is now 1030pm. I sit at my computer drinking coffee, having just weeded the veg plot as the sun set. I am listening to the August Rush soundtrack. Pondering over the day.
My 'to do' list is really long at the moment. So it was nice this evening (after I had finished my part in Jon's new project) to get out of the house and have a drink in the garden bit of my local pub with friends. The gnats got to me in the end though. I have a meeting with a client after work tomorrow, and another on Wednesday evening, followed by a business forum get together and then to end the day another meeting to discus a potential new job to work on.
I haven't put together a cow design for a few weeks now :( Sockmonkey kits are selling quite well considering I am not advertising them at all and they are just being found on Google searches! :) cool! I still need a couple of hours of work to get affirmation arts up and running. All other projects I'm working on tend to concern graphic design. I would love to hire an administrator to do all my admin stuff but am not earning enough to pay them :( So If you want to work long hours with probably the hardest to please person in Wales* and work for free then get in touch ;)
*A lecturer in university told me that I'd 'be a nightmare to work for' one day (because of my almost unachievable high standards). He is very right.

things that make me smile...
I'm feeling all lonely this evening :( aaaaawwwww I hear you say. But I have managed to put a cow up on the mootiful site, do some various prep work for the Swansea Business show and respond to some emails so can't really complain.
Today work was rubbish. A pig of a day in all honesty, but somethings in work are great; Jon, clare and Ruth who always amuse me. Phil who buys me a happy meal every now and again. People who should be there but are missed like Vicky. Random conversations. Jon's impressions. The Vimto lolipops in reception. :D

big it up...
Part of what I do is act bigger than I am. I think that's how many businesses are to be honest. It gives clients security. But to be honest I find it frightening. I mean what if someone found out? but then the rational part of me realises that I am bigger than I think I am. Professionally capable to take on most design jobs and infact I have soooo much design experience it's fantastic. So why do I still find all this 'real world' stuff intimidating when in reality it's just full of worried people 'pretending' to be big.

hurt...
I really had trouble getting out of bed this morning. to be honest i struggle most mornings. a variety of events of late have really been beating me back and i have realy been having a rough time. I don't really understand how life works.
In my last job i went through a stage of knowing that change was around the corner and within a month I had changed job.
... I think it is time to move on again, and leave this pain behind.

life...
Spring is here, although you wouldn't really know it. It's still cold but warmth will come again soon, believe in that.
In our garden we have a weeping cherry tree we planted three years ago. It is only a young tree, a little shorter than myself but it is one of my favorite because of what it symbolises. Soon the sun will warm it enough and it will come into blossom. Its pink flowers shed onto the garden like tears.
... then it will be summer.

i can't hold my coffee...
my hands hurt too much from weeding the patio yesterday (they are now coveered in blisters). It is amazing how huge gardens get when they need weeding. But it is done now anyway. And I think I caught the sun a bit too!
Also on Saturday I bought a load of crops for the garden, just need to plant them up and defend them from the slugs :( booo the slugs! this year in the garden we will have: lettuce, carrots, leeks, red onion, white onion, potato, peas, rhubarb, redcurrant (the birds usually eat these), apples, and possibly sweetcorn and sprouts.

another year older...
Hello, thank you all for your birthday wishes as I have now reached an age where people have stopped saying 'ooo, you are young' and instead say 'ooo, you are getting older now!'. Yesterday however the cows came of age too and 365 days after their conception celebrate their first birthday. I have drawn 103 little beasties so far! and have at least 50 more to draw too. I have a fancy new computer in work too! my old one was getting a bit grumpy when I pushed it too hard..
Office scandal! - Somebody brought in a load more mugs for everyone to use (we have a mug monster who eats them) One of which though was a Purple Ronnie mug about 'man bits'. That mug has now vanished following fits of women giggling and men blushing and having to 'check if it is suitable for the workplace'... fantastic. How old are we? nine?
oh well, ttfn!

rough day...
...today has been a bit of a nightmare following a design job that went to print and came back today - wrong :( Then starts the witch hunt of 'where did it go wrong?' and 'what do we do now?' etc etc... the job potentially would cost another £1100 to fix and eyes were looking at me despite my protests of it being the printer at fault. It was my word against theirs and i was annoyed. Nobody was blaming me as such but I knew what they were doubting me.
But thankfully at about 3pm this afternoon I spoke to someone at the printers who knew what they were talking about and they admitted that it was an error on their part. Relief. Witch caught.
You see I don't mind taking blame for something that is my fault, but when I haven't done anything wrong it really aggravates me...
anyway... my red ring has now cleared up! so this evening i have been able to do my part in ridding the world of terrorists and am looking forward to playing Halo Wars.
I am presently listening to Bonobo:
which has a pleasant Mighty Booshness about it... nice.

little bits of knoledge...
A while back Google thought that Wikipedia was getting too big and decided that maybe they should come up with a Google alternative. Well they eventually did and they called it Knol. Similarly to Wiki it is fueled by people for the people and (differently to Wiki) can also be graded by people. The most approved/reliable/relevant/popular postings come up in a 'google search' way.
I had a word document on my hard drive regarding putting together powerpoints and thought I may as well submit it and see what happens... just click here to see it.

crisp white snow and icey black slush...
Yay snow! Can't remember the last time it was this white out! and as usual the U.K. grinds to a hault. But who can blame it eh? Cath has already today made a snowman (above) and a snowangel (below). And best of all it has just started snowing heavily again! (Watch as pannic buying hits the country and bread and milk stocks run out).
So anyway, Cath won't let me try to get to work (gutted :) ) and the kids dont want me to work from home so I guess today is a day of my annual leave taken up... oh well such sacrifice. So I have defrosted the rabit and put a brew of coffee on! Wrap up warm folks! It's sooooo pretty!

ten things...
I have an idea. Well, it's more of an aspiration for this year. It is titled 'ten things'. The idea is that by December 31st I run/co-run 10 different money-making enterprises.
So far I have the following four of ten under my belt/under construction:
1) Star in a Jar
2) Life is Mootiful
3) Affirmation Arts
4) Make a Sockmonkey
I am not working alone on all of the above for example Life is Mootiful is with Jon, Affirmation Arts is with Cath etc. Maybe you have an idea you think would work and you want to get it off the ground? Send me an email: matt(at)starinajar(dot)co(dot)uk, and let's work on it together! What have you got to loose? Who knows, we might get rich!?!

committal...
Today is a closing and an opening -
A saying goodbye and a saying hello again
Our dear baby
Your life we honour
Your departure we accept
Your memory we cherish
In grief at your death
But in gratitude for your brief life
We commit your body to the ground
Earth to earth
Ashes to ashes
Dust to dust
In sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life.
Rest now
At the end of your short time with us
Your part is played
Rest in the hearts and the minds of those who love you.
Amen.

i dont understand atheists humanists...
Mad.co.uk says "The Advertising Standards Authority has ruled that the campaign (above) is not in breach of the advertising code after receiving more than 300 complaints. The ASA decided that it was unlikely to mislead or “cause serious or widespread offence” and that it was an “expression of the advertiser’s opinion”. To merely provide food for stimulating debate, would the BHA have ever countenanced an ad saying “There is probably no Allah?” And if it did, would the ASA rule again that it was an expression of opinion?"
I don't understand atheism anyway. Surely claiming that you don't believe in anything means you believe in something thus negating the claim of being an atheist? That's probaly why they describe themselves as Humanists instead.
Professor Richard Dawkins says "This campaign to put alternative slogans on London buses will make people think - and thinking is anathema to religion". How did he come to that conclusion? Surely you can think about a religion?
Anyway my favorite quote on the subject comes from Stephen Green of pressure group Christian Voice (eek!) and he says "Bendy-buses, like atheism, are a danger to the public at large". I can't decide if he hates Atheism or Bendy-busses more?!?
People are random...

I have the red ring of death...
It's official. Cath and I are devistated, it has put a hold on the evening activities for a while :( Certain websites say it could be up to three weeks for things to return to normal! but Phil in my office said that his was all cleared up in 24 hours, so we wait optimistically.
In other news - I want to be an American. Almost an American anyway. Why has Gordon Brown never given a speech anywhere near the caliber of good 'ole Barack? I listened to the whole Inauguration speech in work today, and I admit the hairs on my arms did stand up on end. Without a doubt it is significant history in the making but is it negative of me to be quietly pessimistic about it all? My fear is that presidents placed on pedestals are soon likely to be knocked down and then mauled by the media. Oh well, we shall see, for now it is a perk for the world as a whole; motivational, positive, enthusiastic. But can he help my red ring issue clear up any quicker? hmmm....

weekends go by so fast...
I hated Friday, well most of it anyway. It picked up again at 4pm when most of us in the office packed up and went to the cinema to watch Slumdog Millionaire. Great film I must admit, probably going to be one of the best of the year. Possible contenders include Transformers: Revenge of the fallen (June 26th) and X-Men Origins: Wolverine (May 1st),
both of which i'm expecting to be pretty awesome! YAY GAMBIT! WOO HOO! (who is without a doubt my all time favorite x-man!)
Anyway... Saturday continued the weekend with both Cath and I working the garden ready for this years crop. And the rest of the weekend was spent working on the latest project: Affirmation Arts, so I'll keep you posted on that. The week ahead looks busy and involve me upgrading to Adobe CS4, which I am quite excited about. But this is ballanced by me needing to complete my tax return :( boo! Do the x-men have to complete tax returns?
p.s. this evening the xbox broke. gutted.

do you graze?...
My lovely wife has put me onto this new company that delivers portions of fruit to your desk:
They offer a wide range of snacky fruits and you then select things you would like to try, love, hate etc. so it builds up a database of what you eat and then sends 3 of your five a day to you in the post to wherever you are, even your work place! Just type in the code DV4HX4G to get a FREE first box and a half price second box. My first box should arrive in work on Friday!

'loading css stylesheets using javascript in blogger' finally works...
Ok, some readers may pass out from boredom at this blog post but it is anouncing my working blogger template that changes design based on the time of day and season:
Autumn Day
Autumn Night
Winter Day
Winter Night
It took me a while to work it out and I ended up having to learn and write a bit of javascript as I couldn't find anywhere else that I could 'borrow' a working script from.
The script does two things.
One - Works out the season i.e. spring, summer etc
Two - Works out the time of day i.e. day or night
It then puts this data into my stylesheet information in the following way:
href=http://www.starinajar.co.uk/seasons/(var season)/(var timeofday).css
Take a look at the source code of the site to disect it if you want. Part of the problem with the script was that Blogger wasn't parsing the information so I had to change some elements into their Ascii equivalent sto stop the html editor blopcking the changes. Anyway. It works!

um NO!...
Having received a brochure on NPT College short courses over the next few months, some of the options include:
1) Platting your child's hair
2) Preparing for your prom night
3) Male intimate waxing
Ooookay... um. Male intimate waxing eh? One day 9.30am - 4pm £220. (Yep correct £220!) But I have a theory that maybe it is expensive because it's not easy to find fools models willing to have their bits waxed by amateurs. And the reason it's a one day course is that even the willing models they do find aren't stupid enough to return for a second day. I imagine that the course will be filled by angry women who have issues.

life is unfair...
Why should anyone have to pay for a device that tells you you are overweight?
I think the weighing scales in the bathroom are bust, oh well. I will guess I will have to guess my weight each week! Maybe it is worth spending money on new scales when I have lost some weight. I'm sure the display on a new one would be 'generous' in adding a few pounds anyway.

why is it...
...that kids books are way more interesting to read/look at than grown-ups books?
For example children's books are bright, colourful, illustrated, funky, textured etc. And adults books are bland and uniform :( and generally on dirty-looking stock (paper) too!
Next time you go into a book shop, stroll through the kids section . It's fab!
